DESCRIPTION:
Very lovely antique Edwardian era brooch made from moulded galalith, the brooch is shaped as a hand holding a rose.
Galalith is a kind of synthetic plastic material manufactured by the interaction of casein and formaldehyde, it odourless, insoluble in water, biodegradable, non allergenic, antistatic and nonflammable. This kind of early plastic has been discovered in 1893 and patented in 1899, presented at Paris Universal Exhibition in 1900. Galalith was very competitive in price with ivory, bone and horn products and found a natural in fashion industry.
The brooch has its original cardboard box.
