Antique purple silk crochet miser bag for coins, glass beads & cut steel beads embroideries and fringes, collectable miser purse.

14 1/4″ (36.2 cm) long, including fringes, circa 2 3/8″ (6 cm) wide.

DESCRIPTION:
Very lovely and antique French or Italian miser bag, reticule purse, coins purse, wallet, porte Louis, aumoniere. Dating to the late 1800’s, Victorian era.
This lovely miser purse is made from crocheted purple silk, embroidered with a design of cornucopias in beige and flowers embroidered with black glass beads and cut steel beads. The two sides of the purse are decorated with a tassel of cut steel beads at one side and a lace made of cut steel beads at the other side. There are two silver color metal rings, to open the purse.
Miser bags were a common style of coin purse throughout the 19th century.
They were hand made using crochet or netting techniques and often decorated with beads.Patterns for making your own miser bag appeared in ladies’ magazines, and handmade miser bags were popular gift for friends and loved ones. the bags were made with a slit that allowed you to insert your coins, and rings that could slid into place to close the slit and keep the coins inside the purse as you carried in your pocket or a larger bag. Two ended bags allowed you to carry different kinds of coin, and the ends were often decorated differently so that it was easier to tell which kind of coin you were retrieving.

CONDITIONS:
The silk crochet is in good condition with no ruptures, to signal some missing cut steel beads to the lace work, some cut steel beads have rust traces.
