Antique sewing basket, open work wooden sewing basket with hand painted swallows, antique French fretworked wood basket for embroidery work.

11″ by 11″ (28 cm by 28 cm), 3 1/2″ (8.9 cm) tall.

DESCRIPTION:
Antique French sewing basket made from 8 fretworked wooden panels tied together with cords, each panel is hand painted with a swallow. The octagonal bottom is padded and covered with an antique French fabric featuring an Indienne style design with flowers, in tons of pink, light red, pale mauve and pale sage green, on a light beige background.
This basket dates to the late 1800’s or early 1900’s.
This type of fretworked wooden objects with hand-painted or inlaid decorations were a typical handicraft production of the tourist cities of the coast or spa resorts, both in Italy (for example Sorrento) and in France, the swallow is a good luck symbol refers to the meaning of “return”.

CONDITION:
The sewing basket is in very good condition, there are no ruptures and wood worms holes, the fabric is clean and not time worn.

The product has imperfections or a patina due to its age, as can be seen in the photos. Please take a close look at the pictures before making your purchase!
